How to use this tool
This miles to km converter works in both directions and updates live. Type a number into the Miles box and the Kilometers box fills in automatically. Type into the Kilometers box instead and the Miles box updates. The third field shows the same value read as a speed, so you can convert mph speeds to km/h with the exact same factor. Use Swap direction to flip the two boxes, Clear to reset, and Copy result to put the converted value on your clipboard.
The formula
miles = kilometers ÷ 1.60934
One mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometers, which most people round to 1.60934 for everyday distance translation. Because speed is just distance over time, the same factor converts miles per hour to kilometers per hour: 60 mph equals about 96.56 km/h. To go back the other way, divide by 1.60934 instead of multiplying.
A real example
Say you are planning a road trip of 250 miles. Multiply 250 by 1.60934 and you get 402.34 kilometers. If your car cruises at 65 mph, that same factor gives roughly 104.6 km/h. Going the other direction, a 10 km race is 10 divided by 1.60934, which is about 6.21 miles, the classic distance many runners recognize.

Common questions
How many kilometers are in a mile?
One mile equals 1.60934 kilometers (exactly 1.609344). So any miles figure multiplied by 1.60934 gives the distance in kilometers.
How do I convert kilometers back to miles?
Divide the kilometers by 1.60934. For example, 5 kilometers divided by 1.60934 is about 3.11 miles. This tool does that automatically when you type in the Kilometers box.
Does the same factor work for converting mph speeds?
Yes. Speed is distance over time, so 1 mph equals 1.60934 km/h. The speed field on this page shows that equivalent for whatever value you enter, so you can convert mph speeds without any extra math.
Why is one mile 1.60934 kilometers and not a round number?
The mile and the kilometer were defined separately in different measurement systems, so the conversion factor between them is not a tidy whole number. The international agreement fixes one mile at exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
Is this distance translation exact?
The math uses the standard 1.60934 factor and is accurate for everyday use. Displayed results are rounded for readability, so the last digit may differ slightly from a full-precision calculation.
