- Click Calculate to see the estimated tax, your effective rate, and the bracket you top out in.
How brackets work
The US uses progressive brackets, so only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate. Your effective rate, the total tax divided by income, is always lower than your top bracket. The bands below use the 2024 tax-year figures and are for estimation only.
A real example
A single filer with 75,000 dollars of taxable income does not pay their top rate on the whole amount. The first band is taxed lowest, the next band a bit higher, and so on. The result is an effective rate well under the headline bracket, which is why comparing effective rates is more useful than comparing brackets.
Common questions
Is this my exact tax bill?
No. It is an estimate on taxable income using standard brackets. It does not include credits, state tax, or special situations. Confirm with a professional or the IRS.
What tax year is this?
The brackets reflect the 2024 tax year. Rates and bands change, so check current figures before filing.
