Sales Commission Calculator

Work out your commission payout and total earnings from a sale amount and rate.

How to use this tool

Pick a mode at the top. For a single flat bonus rate compensation plan, choose "Flat rate", type the total sale amount, and enter your commission rate as a percent. If your plan pays a fixed salary too, add it in the optional base salary box. Press Calculate to see your commission payout and total earnings. To model a tiered revenue bonus structure, switch to "Tiered rate", set the Tier 1 limit, and give a rate for sales below that limit and a higher rate for sales above it.

How the commission is calculated

Flat: Commission = Sale amount x (Rate / 100)
Tiered: Commission = (Tier 1 portion x Tier 1 rate) + (Tier 2 portion x Tier 2 rate)
Total earnings = Base salary + Commission

With a flat rate, the whole sale is multiplied by one percentage. With a tiered plan, the sale is split: the part at or below the Tier 1 limit earns the Tier 1 rate, and the part above the limit earns the Tier 2 rate. Adding the base salary gives your total earnings for the period.

A real example

Say you close $50,000 in sales on a flat 8% plan with a $3,000 base salary. Your commission is $50,000 x 0.08 = $4,000, and your total earnings are $3,000 + $4,000 = $7,000. Now switch to a tiered plan where the first $10,000 pays 5% and anything above pays 10%. The first $10,000 earns $500, the remaining $40,000 earns $4,000, so the commission is $4,500 and total earnings with the same base salary are $7,500.

Common questions

What is a flat commission rate?

A flat rate applies one fixed percentage to the entire sale amount, no matter how large the sale is. It is the simplest commission structure to calculate and is common in retail and many entry-level sales roles.

How does a tiered revenue bonus structure work?

A tiered structure splits the sale into bands. Sales up to a set limit earn one rate, and sales above that limit earn a higher rate. This calculator supports a two-tier plan: a Tier 1 limit with a Tier 1 rate, and a Tier 2 rate for everything above the limit.

Do I have to enter a base salary?

No. The base salary field is optional. Leave it blank or at zero if you are paid commission only. When you add a base salary, the tool shows it as part of your total earnings.

Are taxes or deductions included?

No. The figures here are gross amounts before income tax, withholding, or any other deductions. Your actual take-home pay will be lower once taxes are applied.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens locally in your browser using plain JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.
