The formula

metric: BMI = kg / (meters x meters) US: BMI = 703 x pounds / (inches x inches)

How to read the categories

Standard ranges are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obese. BMI is a rough screen, not a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle, build, or age, so athletes and others can read high while being healthy.

Common questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It is a population-level screen. For a personal assessment, talk to a healthcare professional who can consider the full picture.
