Sodium Intake Tracker

Add the foods you ate, count the milligrams of sodium, and see how close you are to the 2300 mg daily limit.

This tracker runs entirely in your browser. Your food log is never uploaded and can be saved only on your own device.

How to use this tool

This sodium tracker is a simple milligram counter for everything you eat and drink in a day. Type a food name in the first box and its sodium content in milligrams (mg) in the second box. You can read the sodium value straight from the Nutrition Facts label on packaged food. Press Add food to log another item, and the running total updates instantly. The progress bar fills as you go and turns red once you pass your daily sodium limit, so it is easy to see at a glance whether you are on track to track salt intake for the day. The limit defaults to 2300 mg, but you can change it if your doctor gave you a different target.

How the mg sodium counter works

Total sodium = sum of every food's mg Percent of limit = (Total sodium / Daily limit) x 100 Remaining = Daily limit - Total sodium

There is no hidden math here. The tool simply adds up the milligrams from each row to get your total, then divides that by your daily sodium limit to fill the progress bar. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that most adults keep sodium under 2300 mg per day, which is about one teaspoon of table salt. People with high blood pressure are often advised to aim lower, near 1500 mg. Because the calculator stores nothing on a server, you can optionally save your log to this device using your browser's local storage and it will still be there when you come back.

A real example

Say you log three items: a bowl of canned soup at 890 mg, two slices of bread at 230 mg, and a serving of deli turkey at 480 mg. The mg sodium counter adds these to 1600 mg. Against the 2300 mg daily limit that is about 70%, leaving 700 mg for the rest of the day. The progress bar sits at 70% and stays the accent color. If you then add a frozen dinner at 900 mg, your total reaches 2500 mg, the bar fills past 100%, turns red, and the label shows you are 200 mg over your limit.

Common questions

What is a safe daily sodium limit?

For most healthy U.S. adults the guideline is to stay under 2300 mg of sodium per day. If you have high blood pressure or heart concerns, a common target is closer to 1500 mg. You can set whatever limit you were given in the limit box at the top.

How do I find the sodium in a food?

Check the Nutrition Facts label, where sodium is listed in milligrams per serving. For unlabeled or restaurant food, search the brand or dish name online for its sodium content and enter that number.

Is sodium the same as salt?

No. Table salt is sodium chloride, and only about 40% of it by weight is sodium. One teaspoon of salt is roughly 2300 mg of sodium, which is why that number is often used as the daily ceiling. Labels list sodium, so this counter tracks sodium directly.

Does my food log get saved?

Everything stays in your browser. If you allow it, your rows are kept in local storage on this device so they reload next time. Clearing your browser data or pressing Clear all removes them. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

Can I trust this for medical decisions?

This tool is for general education and tracking only. It is an estimate based on the numbers you enter and is not medical or dietary advice. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian about the right sodium target for you.
