How to use this tool

Enter your height in centimeters and select your sex, then choose Calculate. The tool returns your ideal body weight from two well known clinical formulas, plus a healthy weight range based on body mass index so you can compare the estimates side by side.

The formulas

Devine (male) = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet Devine (female) = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet Robinson (male) = 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet Robinson (female) = 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

These formulas were originally built for medication dosing and give a single target number. Because real bodies vary in frame size and muscle mass, a healthy weight range from a body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 is often more realistic than a single figure.

A real example

A man who is 175 cm tall is about 68.9 inches, or 8.9 inches over 5 feet. The Devine formula gives 50 plus 2.3 times 8.9, which is roughly 70.5 kg, while a healthy BMI range for that height is about 56.7 to 76.3 kg.

Common questions

Which formula should I trust?

No single formula is perfect. The Devine formula is the most widely cited, but viewing it alongside the Robinson result and the healthy BMI range gives a more balanced view.

Why does sex change the result?

On average, men and women have different body compositions and frame sizes, so the formulas use different base weights to reflect that.

Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas give a target figure, while a healthy weight is usually a range. Athletes with high muscle mass can be healthy above their ideal weight figure.

Should I use this for medical decisions?

No. This tool is for general education only and is not a substitute for guidance from a doctor or dietitian.
