How to use this tool

How the 90 minute sleep cycle works
Clock time = asleep time -/+ (minutes to fall asleep)
One cycle = 90 minutes (light sleep, deep sleep, then REM)
During the night your brain moves through repeating sleep cycles that each last around 90 minutes. A cycle runs from light sleep into deep sleep and then into REM, the stage tied to dreaming and memory. Waking at the end of a cycle, when sleep is lightest, feels far easier than being pulled out of deep sleep mid-cycle. Because it takes most people about 15 minutes to actually fall asleep, the calculator first removes that buffer, then steps forward or backward in 90 minute blocks. Five to six cycles, roughly 7.5 to 9 hours, suits most adults.
A real example
Say you need to wake at 7:00 AM and you fall asleep in about 15 minutes. Six cycles is 540 minutes, so you should be asleep by 7:00 minus 9 hours, which is 10:00 PM. Add the 15 minute buffer back and you should be in bed by 9:45 PM. For five cycles (7.5 hours of sleep) you would be asleep by 11:30 PM, so head to bed by 11:15 PM. Both options end a cycle right at 7:00 AM, so the alarm catches you in light sleep rather than deep sleep.

Each 90 minute block represents one full cycle that finishes in or just after the REM stage, when sleep is lightest. The tool lines your wake up time up with the end of a cycle so your alarm is less likely to interrupt deep sleep, which is the main reason mornings feel groggy.
