How to use this tool
Type or paste your post into the box. As you write, the social media character counter shows the total characters, words, and lines, then breaks down how many characters you have used and how many remain for each network. A bar fills toward the limit, and the count turns red the moment a platform is over its cap, so you can trim before you publish.
How the per-platform limits work
Each network counts the visible characters in your text, including spaces, line breaks, hashtags, and emoji-free copy. The current limits this tool checks against are:
- X (formerly Twitter): 280 characters for a standard post, the classic twitter character limit.
- LinkedIn: 3,000 characters for the body of a post, which sets your usable linkedin post length.
- Instagram: 2,200 characters for a single caption.
- Threads: 500 characters, which is the threads post limit per post.
- Facebook: 63,206 characters for a standard post, far more than most posts ever need.
When your character count is at or under a limit, the remaining number stays positive. Once you pass it, the remaining value goes negative and the row turns red, telling you exactly how many characters to cut.
A real example
Say you write a 312 character announcement. Against X the counter shows 312 used and 280 - 312 = -32 remaining, so that row turns red and tells you to trim 32 characters. The same text against LinkedIn shows 312 used and 3,000 - 312 = 2,688 remaining, well within the linkedin post length, while Threads shows 500 - 312 = 188 remaining. One post, checked against every network at once.
Common questions
Does this match how X counts characters?
It counts the visible characters in your text, which matches most plain posts. X shortens links to a fixed length and counts some emoji as two units, so a post heavy with links or emoji may differ slightly from the 280 twitter character limit shown here.
Why is the Facebook limit so high?
Facebook allows up to 63,206 characters in a standard post. That is far longer than a comfortable read, so the bar will usually look nearly empty. Most people stay well under it, but the limit is included for completeness.
What is the Threads post limit?
Threads allows 500 characters per post. This tool shows your remaining count against that figure so you know when to split a longer thought into a second post.
Do hashtags and line breaks count?
Yes. Hashtags, mentions, spaces, and line breaks are all visible characters, so they are included in every count. That is why the totals here reflect what each network actually measures.
Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens entirely in your browser using plain JavaScript. Your post is never uploaded, stored, or sent to a server.
