How the GPA formula works
A grade point average weights each course by how many credits it carries, so a 4-credit class counts more than a 1-credit class. First each letter grade is mapped to points, then every course contributes (its points x its credits), and finally the total points are divided by the total credits. This is the same letter grade to 4.0 conversion used for both high school GPA and college GPA.
On the standard scale the mapping is A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. The plus/minus scale adds steps such as A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and B- = 2.7, which most colleges use. This calculator produces an unweighted GPA, meaning honors and AP classes are not given extra points; if your school adds a bonus for those, your weighted GPA may be higher.
A real example
Say you took four college courses: English (A, 3 credits), Calculus (B, 4 credits), History (A, 3 credits), and Chemistry (C, 4 credits). The grade points are 4.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 2.0. Multiply by credits: (4.0 x 3) + (3.0 x 4) + (4.0 x 3) + (2.0 x 4) = 12 + 12 + 12 + 8 = 44 quality points. Total credits are 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14. So GPA = 44 / 14 = 3.14.
Common questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0 regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB classes, so it can rise above 4.0. This tool calculates the standard unweighted GPA.
How do I convert a letter grade to 4.0 scale points?
Each letter maps to a number: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. On a plus/minus scale, a plus adds 0.3 and a minus subtracts 0.3, so B+ = 3.3 and B- = 2.7. The calculator does this mapping for you.
Does this work for both high school and college GPA?
Yes. The math is identical. Just enter the credit hours your school assigns to each class. High school classes are often worth 1 credit each, while college courses commonly carry 3 or 4 credits.
What credit value should I use if I am not sure?
Check your transcript or syllabus for the credit hours per course. If your school treats every class equally, you can enter 1 for each row and the result will be a simple average of your grade points.
