Tip, Split, and Tax Calculator

Work out the tip, add sales tax, and split a restaurant bill evenly between everyone at the table.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.

How to use this tool

Enter the bill amount before tax, then set the tip percent (a quick 18 percent tip is filled in for you). If you want the totals to include sales tax, type your local tax rate; leave it blank to skip it. Set how many people are sharing the bill, choose whether the tip is figured on the pre-tax or post-tax amount, and press Calculate. You will see the tip, the sales tax, the grand total, and the per-person share so you can divide the restaurant bill in seconds.

How the tip, tax, and split are calculated

tax = bill × (tax percent / 100)
tip base = bill (pre-tax) or bill + tax (post-tax)
tip = tip base × (tip percent / 100)
grand total = bill + tax + tip
per person = grand total / number of people

Sales tax and tip are both percentages applied to a base amount. Tax always applies to the bill. The tip is usually figured on the pre-tax bill, which is the standard in the United States, but some people prefer to tip on the after-tax amount, so the tool lets you pick. The grand total is the bill plus tax plus tip, and the gratuity split simply divides that total by the size of your party.

A real example

Say four friends share a dinner with an $84.50 bill before tax. With a sales tax of 7.25 percent, the tax is 84.50 × 0.0725 = $6.13. An 18 percent tip on the pre-tax bill is 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21. The grand total is 84.50 + 6.13 + 15.21 = $105.84. Split four ways, each person pays $105.84 / 4 = $26.46, and the tip portion alone is $15.21 / 4 = $3.80 per person.

Common questions

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

In the United States it is most common to tip on the pre-tax bill, since the tax is money that goes to the government rather than the service. That is the default here, but you can switch to tipping on the after-tax amount if you prefer.

What is a normal tip percentage?

For sit-down restaurant service, 15 to 20 percent is typical, with 18 percent being a common middle choice. For exceptional service many people tip 20 percent or more. The tool defaults to 18 percent but you can change it to any value.

Can I split the bill unevenly?

This calculator divides the restaurant bill evenly across the whole party. For uneven splits, calculate each person's items separately, then use the tool on each subtotal to add the matching tip and tax.

Do I have to enter the sales tax?

No. The tax field is optional. If you leave it blank or enter zero, the tool simply calculates the tip and total on the bill amount alone.

Is the per-person amount rounded?

The displayed amounts are rounded to the nearest cent for readability. Because of rounding, the per-person shares may add up to a cent or two off the grand total. Round one person's share up if you want the totals to match exactly.
