How to use this tool

Type your bill amount, then drag the tip percent selector left or right to set how much you want to leave. The big percent number and every figure below update the moment you move the slider, so this works well as a fast gratuity slider on a phone right at the table. Tap one of the quick preset buttons for the common 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25 percent if you would rather not drag. If you are splitting the check, set how many people are sharing it and the tool shows the amount each person owes. Use the copy button to save or text the breakdown.

How the tip is calculated

Tip amount = bill × (tip percent ÷ 100)
Total = bill + tip amount
Per person = total ÷ number of people

A tip, or gratuity, is a percentage added on top of the listed bill for service. In the United States, dining tips of 15 to 20 percent are common for sit-down restaurants. This mobile tip calculator slider applies your chosen tip percent to the pre-tax or post-tax bill you enter, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides that total evenly when more than one person is paying. The math stays the same whether you drag the slider or use the tip percent selector buttons.

A real example

Say dinner for two costs $48.50 and you slide the tip to 20 percent. The tip amount is 48.50 × 0.20 = $9.70. The total is 48.50 + 9.70 = $58.20. Split between two people, each person pays 58.20 ÷ 2 = $29.10. Drag the slider down to 15 percent and the tip drops to $7.28, the total becomes $55.78, and each share falls to $27.89.

Common questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax bill is a common rule of thumb, but many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the dining tip phone calculator applies your chosen percent to it.

What is a normal tip percent for a restaurant?

In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is typical for table service, with 18 to 20 percent for good service. The preset buttons cover the usual range, and the slider lets you fine-tune any value from 0 to 30 percent.

Can it split the bill between several people?

Yes. Set the number of people sharing the check and the tool divides the total evenly, showing the per-person amount alongside the full total.

Does it work offline on my phone?

Yes. The fast gratuity slider runs entirely in your browser with no network connection needed, so you can use it at the table even with a weak signal.

Why does the result not change when I clear the bill?

If the bill field is empty or not a number, the tool treats the bill as zero, so the tip and total stay at $0.00. Enter a positive bill amount to see the gratuity calculated.
